this page will be for feature story ideas

State Park Introduces Wildlife to Students

I think a feature about the Lumber River State park would be an excellent feature to write. I would go from the angle about everything that the park has to offer such as camping, boating, fishing and hiking trails. My proposed angle would be to offer a little bit of information about each of the described activities in order to get people a full view of what all the park has to offer.

I would start out researching this article by visiting the state park website to find out exactly what the state park does have to offer. I would also check the prices, times that the park is open and where the park is to make myself fully aware of what all the park does offer. I would then visit the park to get a full view myself. After doing all this I would then talk to people who know more about nature and the park then me. Dr. Lisa Kelly of the biology department would be a good source. She often takes student trips down the river and does research on the native enviornment as part of her work. I would also interview park officals and students that have visited the park.

The audeince for this article would be very vast. Anyone who enjoys nature may want to read my article to discover what exactly the park offers. UNCP students may be interested because it is a nearby attraction and may make a good weekend trip. People that already know about the park may be interested to discover more about it.

Ants on Campus

Ants on campus are a major problem they get into living quarters, cars and even purses. Because they are such a major nussaince I believe that this would make an a interesting feature story. In my article I would first identify the problem and then discuss the ways to get rid of them both chemically and humanely.

Dr.Ezel is a professor on campus who studies insects and would be a good source for quotes. I would also look on Walmart.com for the means that they have for getting rid of ants as well as looking st the price and reviews. Finally I would talk to different students on. Campus who have gotten rid of ants before and how they did it.

This article would be of great interest to students on campus who are looking to get rid of ants. They may also chose to keep this article for future refrence.

New Honors College Chair

Brandon Blackwell was elected as the honors college chair this past year and in taking this position he has many new visions for the honors college. I think that this would make a good feature. I would focus on his visions for the Honors College for the upcoming year along with a short life history about him.

In order to do this feature I would interview him about his aspirations for the honors college and how he intends to go forward with these plans. I would also talk to Honors College council members and students about how they feel about his leadership and visions. I would also interview the Honors College Dean about his views of working with Brandon.

This feature would speak mostly to Honors College students and prospective students that will be influenced by how he intends to lead the group. It would also interest faculty in the Academic Affairs and other offices that work closely with the honors college.

New UNCP Gear Available at Walmart

This year UNCP allowed other businesses, such as Walmart, to have the licensure to produce UNCP clothing. I think that this would make a good feature. I would go from the angle of comparing prices at the bookstore, asking students what they think about the new clothing, asking the chancellor why the university decided to do so and what this will mean for bookstore sales.

To do research for this article there are many steps I would have to take. The first would be to go to Walmart and to the bookstore and find the prices of UNCP clothing at both. After this I would then analyze the numbers to figure out how much cheaper one is over the other. I would then ask the bookstore how this licensure is affecting their sales and the Walmart manager if these new items are popular. I would then ask the chancellor who announced this licensure at the beginning of the year why he did so and what it will mean for the university. Finally I would ask students on campus what they think about the new clothing at Walmart and how they think it will influence campus morale.

This article would be of interest to much of the campus community. Bookstore employees will be interested because of how it will influence their jobs. Students will be interested about the new UNCP gear. Faculty will be interested, because this project is part of the chancellor’s initiative to promote UNCP. The number of students enrolled at the university has a direct correlation with their jobs. Therefore this initiative may have a correlation with their jobs.

Columbian Student Serves Up On This Year’s Tennis Team

Monica Esponitia is a student on a tennis scholarship from Columbia. She is also a part of the Honors College and is interested in philosophy. In this sports feature I would focus on how Monica’s stellar tennis record, student success and the differences that she has experienced since in being in America.

The information in this article would mostly come from an interview with Esponitia. I would ask her about her schoolwork, how she has enjoyed being in America and how she enjoys being on the tennis team. I would also interview Esponitia’s coach and teammates about how they feel about her and what they have learned about her culture. Finally I would interview some of her teachers about how she in class and the ways that her difference in culture adds to other students’ learning.

This article would interest a wide amount of students. Students interested in both the tennis team and the Honors College would be interested in her because she is a part of both of these groups. Also students interested in or from Columbia may be interested in this article.

Robeson County Museum  provides local history

The Robeson County Museum is located in Robeson county and has many permanent exhibits that tell about the local people and history of Robeson. This feature would be a profile of the museum and give a brief overview of all of the different exhibits that the museum has.

The information in this article would come from a visit to the museum and be based on my observations. I would also talk to the adminstrator over the museum and ask questions. I would also ask people who volunteer at the museum why they think that preserving the history of Robeson County is important.

This article would appeal to people who live in and around Robeson County. This article would especially appeal to UNCP students. Most UNCP students do not know about the museum and may be interested in going to it. Plus many students do projects about the local area and may be able to use the museum as a resource.

Ghosts of the Carolina Civic Center

The Carolina Civic Center located in Lumberton is said to be haunted by the director and I feel that this would make a good feature story. I would focus on 1-2 supposed ghosts and tell the legend surrounding them and give comments provided by those who have said to have had an experince with the ghost.

The information from this interview would come mostly from Director Richard Sceifor of the center. I feel that he would be a good resource because he is one of the ones who pushed forward with the renovations and knows a lot about the center. I would also talk to people who said they've had an experince with the ghost. I would also do a search at the Robeson County Library to see what turned up about the life of the deceased person.

This article would be published around Halloween when people are most interested in spooky concidences. I feel around this time it would interested almost anyone who gets into the holiday.

Girly toddlers of today, tomorrow

Over the summer I read a book regarding how disney princesses and other parts of the girly girl culture have had a lasting impact on the pyschological development of young girls. I think that further ivestigation of this would make a good feature for this article. The Calender family located in Shallotte NC has three daughters ages 5, 10 and 19 that have always been pushed in beauty pageants. I think a feature on them and comparing the mental state of each girl to other girls in their age groups.

In order to complete this article I would first interview each of the three girls about how their competing has influenced thier lives and about feministic ideals. After this I would speak to a pyschologist about their answers and what he believes is health behavior for girls at their ages.

I believe that this article would interest alot of people. Girls that have been involved in pageants in past years would be interested and mothers thinking or wondering about pageant life would also be interested. Finally child pageant reality shows have become very popular in reccent years and watchers of these shows would be interested in this article.

What to do If your care floods

Flooding on campus is a very large problem especially in the Oak Residence Hall parking lot. Many times students are unable to get to their cars and many times there are damages done to their cars. For the purposes of this article I would discuss what students should do with their cars if there is water around it, how to know when it is safe to drive through deep puddles and the damages that students should be aware of if their cars flood.

In order to complete this article I would interview a local mechanic who should know more about the dangers of flooding. I would then speak to students that have had problems in the past with their cars flooding on campus and talk to them about how they handled it. I would also talk to sgt. Locklear in the police department about where the best places for parking are on campus for students after a heavy rainfall.

I believe that this article would be of interest mainly to students who live on campus and park regularly on campus. This would help them to know how to handle on campus flooding and where to park to best avoid flooding. It would also interest people in the local area since this area is known for flooding.

Lumber River or Drowning Creek

This article would be a historical piece talking about how Lumber River used to be called Drowning Creek because of the ample amounts of drownings that were caused by the currents of the river and the dark colors of the wife. Today this area is said be haunted by the screams of those that drowned in the creek. I would tell the history of the river and then focus on a view of the most famous drownings in the creek.

In order to complete this article I would look up news articles from local and state newspapers that talk about the name changing of the creek. I would also interview one of the park rangers who were know more about the park. A would also interview someone who claims to have heard the ghostly screamings from the creek and someone whose family member drowned in the creek.

I believe that this article would be prefect for the local area around Halloween. I believe that since it focuses on a local attraction many people would be interested to learn something about the history of it. Others would be interested about the "ghostly" points of the story as a Halloween novelty.
